We didn’t include Kwesta in our list of Top South African rappers for no reason. The guy is doing great and putting out good records. Since his DaKAR II album in 2016, he has been breaking records, and he’s still holding it down.

A rapper like Kwesta is why M.I would say “Y’all getting kill3d by the South”.

Holding the record as the first African double-disc hip-hop album to go Gold; his 22-track DaKAR II, was certified 7x platinum in April. That is to say, the album has sold 210, 000 copies.

Given that Nas’ Illmatic, one of hip-hop’s best albums ever only pushed litte above 300, 000 copies in it’s first year; we can say it’s a great milestone for a local hip-hop artist to sell 210, 000.

He’s also one of the most radio-friendly artistes in the whole of SA. And that’s owing to his numerous collaborations. Kwesta knows how to use his features well. That has been a major promotion strategy for his album.

This year he dropped the video to his single, “Spirit ” featuring American rapper Wale. The single was released last year, under Urbantainment, with an exclusive license to Sony Music Africa.

The video, which has a cameo appearance from Jidenna, was released on YouTube in January. And it now has a whooping 3 million views.

Yesterday, Kwesta took to his Twitter to share the good news. It didn’t only reach 3m, it has also grossed with 9k more views. We believe that the video will approach the 5m mark in a few weeks.

Kwesta, Da King of African Rap (DaKAR), was born in Gauteng, and has practiced spoken word poetry since the age of 16. Currently signed to Urbantainment and Sony Music Africa, he’s one of South Africa’s top rappers.

He shot to international stardom after his single “Ngud” featuring Cassper Nyovest blew up in 2016. He’s has songs with the likes of Cassper, AKA, Bucie, Tellaman, Okmalumkoolkat and Wale.
