The campaign against police brutality has gone beyond just a Twitter Trend. It has metamorphosed into a solid movement. Already, the EndSARS petition by activist, Segalink, has been signed over 48, 000 times, out of the needed 50K.

And more artistes are keen on utilizing their voices to promote the course. RuggedMan was one of the very first to do it, then Vector did “SARS Is Around”. Igbo rap legend, Mr Raw also did a song titled “19” weeks ago for the same purpose.

Upcoming artistes have equally joined in the fight by doing songs that addresses the subject. Leading the pack is Zlatan Ibile, who did a very short skit-like song with the End-SARS theme. Others who have joined the campaign include Swizz, Mode Real, and Breezy.

HipHopHead reached out to them, for a small chat on the subject matter. Here they all shared their experiences with the deadly group.

Swizz

Swizz is a fast-rising rapper. And according to him, he has had two encounters with the SARS. Talking about one of such occasions, he had said;

“No phone, they found only 2go, and nothing else implicating. All they saw was credit alert”

He wasn’t with an Android phone, but his credit alert implicated him. What now happened?

“I was taken to the ATM to withdraw money, and they left me to go”

That was what inspired him to go into the booth, and do something like what Zlatan Ibile did. A short rendition called “End SARS”. And a video is in the works, again. Swizz thinks the SARS unit of the police should be scrapped completely.

Breezy

Breezy is another young upcoming rap artiste that has had an encounter with them. On the 20th of June, he dropped his own EndSARS track.

“Last time I had an encounter with them, I was on braid, and was going to a show. They stopped me, and asked me to bring out my phone, I gave it to them. But they couldn’t find any illegal thing on it. I asked for my phone and they be like; you be yahoo boy, you no dey go anywhere”

He also added that they took the only N1, 500 on him that day. He’s had three encounters with them in total, and these prompted his “EndSARS” song.

Mode Real

Mode Real did a song  titled “Fed Up” in June about the SARS issue. He later did a video that portrayed the brutal actions of officers of the SARS.

He also has been stopped by men from the SARS on a number of occasions. Narrating his experience, he talked about witnessing extortion from a guy who was selling “ordinary balm”, just because they saw big money in his pocket.

On whether the squad should be reformed or scrapped, he said frankly;

“Sincerely, I commend some of their works, but harassing law abiding citizens is a very bad thing. But I would prefer the reformation of the department than total scrapping basically because of their primary assignment”

The EndSARS campaign doesn’t sound like cooling down any time soon, unless the government takes action. Because when the likes of RuggedMan, Vector, Falz and Mr Raw lend their voices, then it’s not something to ignore.

Meanwhile, Terry Tha Rapman has recently been listed as one of the judges at the 2018 Hennessy VS Class Full news HERE.
