One of the trending issues on Social Media, was a campaign to End SARS, a Special Anti Robbery Squad unit of the Nigerian Police Force. Millions of Nigerians, on Twitter, Facebook & IG have taken to their pages to talk about their experiences with the dreadful squad.

And in conclusion, Nigerians want the government to eradicate SARS. Thus the trending hashtag “#EndSARS” that took over. Celebrities also weighed in, with Vector and RuggedMan taking it on wax. Vector did “Gunshots” and RuggedyBaba did “Is Police Your Friend?”. Somehow, the tension has calmed. But the brutalities have not stopped.

This year, a lot of issues involving citizen harassment from SARS officials have come up. And recently, citizens have begun to fight back. Thus a breath of fresh air to the struggle. A couple of celebrities, including African China, Falz, Dr. Sid and recently Jaywon, have been harassed by men from the SARS.

Falz addressed the issue on his viral “This Is Nigeria” hit. Also in April, RuggedMan shot a video for his “Is Police Your Friend” track, to further boost the message.

In the past week, RuggedMan has been actively involved in the #EndSARS trend, especially on Twitter. It happened that @Naijadailyfeed put up a video thread on Twitter, on the 12th of June.

The thread shows videos of atrocities committed by SARS officials, including the video of an official threatening to shoot African China, a video of officers smoking weed, a video of the shooting of a delta big boy and more.

When RuggedMan saw the tweet, he had tweet showed his displeasure over the situation. He said;

“I went through this thread and I prayed extra hard for Nigeria not to turn into a war zone between the @PoliceNG and citizens because of the actions of SARS”.

When @citizen_gavel, an organization providing legal support to victims of human rights abuse and police brutality, led by Segun Awosanya, invited RuggedMan to their event “End SARS Hackaton” taking place 16th June, at Civic Hive, Lagos, the rapper quickly replied;

“I am there waiting for you already”

Showing full interest. The organizer, Segun Awosanya, known as Segalink, is a prominent supporter of the End SARS movement, and he was in the “Is Police Your Friend” Video.

Meanwhile, as tweets floated in from June 12 to 14, Ruggedman kept preaching the “End SARS” gospel. Until the Police Force got into the conversation. They then put up a tweet stating that

“aggrieved members of the public who have any complaint in the past or present of violation of their rights by any Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) personnel anywhere in the country should report”

On the same day, “Ehen” rapper asked celebrities to speak up on the issue. He urged them to join the ongoing conversation.

And so far, his tweets seems to be yielding good results. We should commend Ruggedman, even if he is not going to be dropping an album anytime soon; he sure is acting like an OG!
