There’s no restriction to what gets called “hip hop” in Nigeria. I once had a heated argument with someone who claimed Wizkid rapped on a certain track called “Say Nuh To Badman”. In fact what he did on that jam was Patois.

He didn’t Even stop there in all his ignorance, he went further to name Wizkid as a hip hop artiste. I once tested the knowledge of a producer who should know a lot about about music. I told him that Davido wasn’t a hip hop artiste. But of course they laughed at me. I mean, these people were ignorant. And the worst kind of ignorance comes from those who think they know.

Yesterday, a Facebook user by the name Classiq Kuttie did a post listing 20 hip hop songs of all time. But there was no single rap song on it beside “WO” and “Shoki”, which are not standard hip hop songs when compared to what is obtainable.

His list had songs like Flavour’s Ashawo, Psquare’s Do Me, Harrysong’s Reggae Blues, Skelewu, Alingo, Kukere, IF, Ojuelegba, Yori Yori and Fall In Love. Nonsense.

Nigerians just seem to be ignorant of what the term “hip hop” is. And of course, it’s time for orientation. Maybe we’ll have to start seminars teaching the true meaning of hip hop. For now, it’s a sad situation.
