Video Premiere: A-Q Shows Mastery And Brilliance On “Lekki Expressway”

Hustle ink co-owner, Gilbert Bani, known as A-Q is one of the most impressive rappers at the moment. The question on your mind will be “Why is that so?”. My answer to you is that it is obvious that his recent release which includes a song and video “Lekki Expressway” is nothing but pure vibe.

There’s no dispute about it. A-Q is actually a front line of Nigerian hip-hop act. He is doing everything within his power to pull available resources together and put his art on the map. The rapper is building a solid foundation for his breakout.

LIST: 9 underground emcees are better than your favorite rapper

If there is anything left for A-Q, it will be for him to go mainstream. And to possibly become an iconic rap figure in Africa. He can reach the level of Sarkodie, M.I Abaga, Casper Nyovest and A.K.A. Because he can hold his own bar for bar. After the mainstream resurgence of rap music after MI Abaga’s Crowd Mentality in 2006; we have basked in hopes of a new breakout. I strongly feel that the next in line to take over that mantle is none other than Gilbert Bani.

A lot of hip hop heads will disagree with me on that. Names like Falz, Yung6ix, Ycee, Boogie, Vector, Blaqbonez might just come to mind as the next cats to take over from M.I Abaga when he takes his retirement.

A-Q isn’t rated or hyped as a rap veteran, despite already producing four solid albums and this should be addressed. Having taken my time to study his growth and development, I boldly believe that A-Q is that Nigerian rapper who got the onus and the skill to take on the hypothetical “rappers from the South”.

Lekki Expressway Video

This the second single off A-Q’s album titled “Blessed Forever”. Lekki Expressway is a song produced by Beats BJayy. And the featured artiste, Wavy The Creator, happens to be a new name ringing a bell in ears of the music industry critics.

A-Q

The music video to Lekki Expressway is directed by Brotha Lee. He portrays a scenario of the life of a Lagos night clubber. A-Q is seen riding in the backseat of a Lexus Car, texting and finally picking up his girlfriend along Lekki Expressway en route to a party at a Club.

Partying in clubs and drinking alcohol are what we can see in the video. It portrays a picture of “The Island Boys” popularly known as Lekki big boys drinking, smoking and clubbing. The lyrics are top notch, coming┬áthrough with a sick delivery.

Before listening to this song, I expected the normal A-Q to go traditional. I expected him to spit bars on an acute trap instrumental or rap on a sick hardcore beat. But upon hearing the song, A-Q’s diversity and versatility came to the fore as listeners can clearly hear him rapping on an alternative dance-funked beat. Frankly speaking, I totally enjoyed the dexterity of the track. I love everything about it, from the production, to the visual concept to the song arrangement.

Away from A-Q, I believe it is important to pay attention to Wavy the Creator. Just as Mode9ine paved the way for Maka on the track “No Matter What”. Her Vocals came in handy, fans should not only rate her performance on the featured song but also pay more attention to her skills.

A-Q is a darling of the Nigerian hip hop community. His creativity speaks whenever he steps into the sound recording booth. The University of Lagos graduate is believed to be one of the the most controversial rappers by a portion of hip hop Lovers. This due to his tendency to bust-up with fellow emcees. However, that’s is the temperament of a true choleric and we’d rather focus on his lyrical ability.
