How did you come about your stage name?

I got my name through an evaluation of my self, my music, and my vision. I got inspired by the outcome of my evaluation, and the best expression of this result in words is Pen, figuratively.

Pen

What inspired you to venture into music

The nature of the art of Hip Hop inspired me. Its one platform that I fell in love with due to the fact that it allows me be who I am and who I want to be at any given time. I don’t have to change who I am to be a rapper, instead my rap reflect my personality. Its a platform that allows me be radical and intellectual, and make money at the same time.

Tell us about your Childhood and family background

I come from a Christians nuclear family of eight. I am the fourth child and last son. My childhood was fun and music was one of the things I grew up with. Not just listening to the music alone but knowing the lyric word for word because then knowing the full lyric of the trending song was a competition everybody wanted to win.

Pen, how do you combine music and school

Man! School is the biggest competition my music is having right now, but I am pushing through by Gods grace. My biggest strength basically is in the fact that I see the music as part of schooling, as a course on its own that I shouldn’t carry over. So with this consciousness the music gets its own fair time and attention without my academics suffering in return.

What has been your greatest challenge and success as a rapper

My greatest challenge is the finance, and also the media not supporting the art that much. Regarding my success so far; I started my career successfully by winning the Abuja’s next rapper competition in 2015, and since then its been growth all the way.

Name a top artiste would you like to feature and why

Locally I will like to feature Vector for a verse. This is because Vector has been one of my greatest influence locally over the years.  I believe I have grown to be better and different from him. However one can only prove such a claim by being on the same song with him. Internationally, I will love to collaborate with J Cole or Kanye West because of the way they philosophize in their songs.

Do you have any upcoming projects we need to watch out for?

Yes, I headlined my school cypher (Uni Abuja) and it will be dropping very soon. I just started work on my album too, this might take sometime to be ready but singles will be dropping on a steady basis. Stay tuned.

Who is your role model and why do you respect him

It has to be Kendrick Lamar. I love him for the depth of his thought and it reflects on his lifestyle.

Where do you see yourself two years from now?

In two years I will be way better than I am right now with the music in an artistic sense. I will be an improved professional, and be so busy with the music. And I will also be done with school so more of my focus and attention will be on the art.
