Skales new album titled “The Never Say Never Guy” is about the singer’s resilience and refusal to give up in the face of innumerable adversity. There could not have been a better album title.
It sad that Skales, an artist who we once took serious when he shared his Grammy dreams, has become the cheap shot for jokes in the Nigerian internet space.
There was a time when Banky W lined up Skales and Wizkid as his generals at Empire Mates Entertainment. After failing to live up to expectations at EME, Skales left the label after 4 fruitless years in 2014.
After toiling for some years, he signed a deal with Baseline Records and the song “Shake Body” came in and changed his story. But its been more than two years ago.
The singer has taken a lot of blows in his career but in recent months. But this album is met with a number of good reviews. It’s hard not to root for Skales new album “the never say never guy”
Skales new album The Never Say Never Guy, is out now. Skales embodies its very spirit by stubbornly refusing to be counted out.
After a public fall out with Baseline Records, and an eventual reconciliation with the label. Skales poured out all of his frustrations into his pen and reacquainted with his former boss Banky W on the triumphant comeback single “Nobody’s Business”
That’s the definition of reality music. The song was important because it stopped the bleeding and changed the narrative decisively from Skales being a punching bag to Skales the fighter.
But “Nobody’s Business” didn’t set the charts on fire, that is the job for “Temper Remix” featuring Burna Boy. The mid-tempo, anti-rage crusade became a street anthem, particularly early in the year.
Sadly, just when we thought Skales was finally about to catch a break. The video for the song was blocked on YouTube after a complaint by the Fela estate. Issues arose regarding his sampling of Fela’s catalog without permission.
However after Skales management had cleared things up with the estate, the video was unblocked. Skales didnt waste any time to place it on this album. The “Temper (Remix)” moment is important too because the record has become Skales biggest hit since the bug hit “Shake Body”.
But that’s not even all for Skales. Last year, he celebrated the achievement of buying his mother a house. Taking care of his mother is a desire he expressed very often in his music.
Early in 2017, Skales also launched his own record label OHK Entertainment and signed Santos, a young Nigerian rapper. He has began the tough transition from artiste to label owner.
What a difference a few months and some strategic planning can make. He has had a remarkable turnaround in the last few months. Hopefully Skales new album will help him put all of that ugliness behind him once and for all. Especially since his debut album was a massive flop.
Skales has truly given himself a second chance. This album has 16 tracks and 3 bonus tracks. It features collaborations with artists like Wande Coal, Phyno, Timaya, Lil Kesh, Davido and Tekno.
The biggest steal was in getting Maroon 5 singer PJ Morton on the project. Skales new album “the Never Say Never Guy” might surprise you. Get the project below:
