When hip hop meets an intelligent Hausa rapper, what you get is Arewa hip hop. This micro sub genre may not seem like much right now but there is an ever increasing awareness about their efforts.
Many hip hop heads believe northern Nigeria is the home of Nigerian hip hop. Its only natural for Hausa, the local language to become the next best rap language.
Olamide holds it down for the westerners, Phyno keeps it real for the Easterners. Now these Arewa musician are representing the northerners in the Nigerian music industry.
While many of the artistes on this list are not what you consider mainstream artistes, they possess all the qualities of international heavy weights.
The rappers that made this list embody lyricism, vocal finesse, stage craft, wordplay and fluency.

1. DJ ABBA
His name is Abba. He is a multi talented musician and music producer. He can rap and sing in Hausa as well as in English. The Kaduna based Arewa hip hop artiste is a total entertainer.
He is a singed to YaranNorthSide Entertainment. DJ Abba Owns a multipurpose Studio called YNSStudios in Kaduna. He is one if the most promising rappers from the north.
His thug mixtape put him in a bright spot. However his best ever song is titled Babarsa, its on every Hausa boys lips these days. So do think DJ Abba is the best Hausa rapper?
2. BOC Madaki
BOC Born Luka Dinda Bulus Madaki, is a Nigerian rapper from Bauchi state. His name BOC is an abbreviation for Barde Ogan Chasu. He is a skilled bi-lingual rapper who can rap in both English and in Hausa. His fan base is growing wildly and he is still humble and always proud of his roots.
This Arewa rapper is doing good for himself. Born and raised in the Beehive city of Bauchi State, he has received a lot of positive reviews from Nigerian hip hop observers. Many believe him to be equal to, or even better than Classiq. This is a serious argument that always divides the Arewa rap fans into factions.

Hafeez is one of Arewa’s fast rising talents. He is very hard working and will eclipse the already known names in the Hausa rap genre if he continues at this level.
The Kaduna born rap artiste is heavily influenced by the predominantly Hausa speaking environment he grew up in. It reflects in his music and you will be nothing short of impressed by his fluency.
The self proclaimed “Sarikin sautin arewa” translated into English as “King of northern music” collaborated with major atistes like Davido on “Taka rawa” featuring. Cast a vote for Hafeez if he is your favorite Arewa hip hop artiste.

Kheengz also known as YFK is a versatile Nigerian hip hop musician with the ability to communicate fluently with his Hausa rap style.
This Minna based Arewa rapper has a growing fan base throughout the whole of Niger state.
He is a graduate of civil engineering from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. He is known for his raw vocal finesse and braggadocio themed verses.
His delivery is also crystal clear. Kheengz is putting the North on the map of Nigerian hip hop.

5. V blaiz
Born Victor Elsha, Vblaiz is an impressive underground Nigerian rapper who prefers to deliver his English verses with a mix of the Hausa lingo.
He started getting a lot of attention when he dropped his soul upgrade mix tape which contained songs like “Gaya musu” and “koro koro eye”.
The Jos based rapper is signed to DPer records. He is a member of YWAP and thus strongly affiliated to christian rap group Soul Flame. He is an impressive and dynamic Arewa rap artiste.

Al’chaddas Born Alfred Ogbonna, is a fresh Nigerian hop hop act doing justice to the arewa rap.
His stage name is a mish mash of two names; “Chaddas” a nickname from secondary school and “Al” from the first two letters of his birth name Alfred.
The rapper is of Igbo extraction. He was born in London on 1st of October 1990, the independence day. But his family moved bank to Nigeria in the early 90s so he spent most of his life in Jos.

This versatile musician was born in Bauchi state. He rose to prominence after dropping “anti social” a single which featured Olamide.
We all thought he was just a singer until he revealed otherwise. He is probably the most mainstream contemporary Arewa artiste so far.
Morell is gifted with a stinging high pitched voice. He rapping is only rivaled by his singing. He anchored one of my favorite hooks, on Terry tha Rapmans “money all day” BANS group collaboration.
Morell was signed to NordanOrty entertainment. You really need to hear his “ganga da gariya”. He is able to switch from English ad-leaping to Hausa rap in a second. The Borno state indigene is a graduate from the University of Maiduguri. He is reaching fever high levels.

Born Umar ibn ayya grew up in Jos the tin city of Nigeria. IBN was heavily influenced by the vibrant hip hop community in plateau state from an early age and took to rapping in his teens.
When he released his promotional single “ina maza suke” it gathered more than 50,000 downloads in its first month of release. As expected, this attention came radio air plays all over Nigeria.
This young Hausa rapper is really dynamic with his flow.

9. Dr. Smith
Simon Bulus is an indigene of Plateau State from Pankshin Local Government Area. His stage name Lyrical Dr. Smith, is a simple representation of his clinical rapping style.
He is a witty hip hop artist who has a fan base in Jos. Not only is he a Hausa rapper, he is also an On Air Personality with Unity FM 93.3 Jos.
According to gossip, he plans to diversify his art and stray into movie making also.

Born Buba Barnabas Luka, Classiq hails from Bauchi State. Classiq is changing the Hausa rap game as his fan base continues to grow. He has been able to destroy the stereotypical view of Arewa hip hop.
Its not just confined yo the predominantly Hausa speaking northern audience anymore. This Hausa rapper has a lot of fans in Lagos. He was born on the 21 st of September 1991 and according to him, he started singing at the age of 16.
Classiq is a crafty rapper, armed with an eye for ear grabbing punchlines and alternating rhyme schemes.
Earlier this year, Rahama Sadau got banned from Kannywood. This was directly due to her participation in a music video for Classiq’s “I love you” track. Her dance with the rapper was deemed inappropriate. The queen of Kannywood has not made any popular appearance since then.
